Update: Hometown Bound

The Railway Cafe is nearing completion.  Justin is putting the final touches on the interior--I visited with him today to check out the progress....it will not be long now!!
We wanted the interior to feel vintage and rustic with an edge.  The thing we did not want to do was give it a "Railroad" theme.  Instead, we used custom photography of views from a railroad track as the main art in the dining area.  The shades are fashioned from garden wire.  The benches along the wall represent the idea of benches that might have been in a railway station at one time......

Bill Sofield

Tusk Table

Even before I met Bill Sofield, I was a huge fan of his work.  His re-do of the SoHo Grand Hotel was stellar, and one of the first projects of Bills that caught my eye.  So, it was a huge honor to have been able to help him (and I use the word help loosely--basically doing anything he would ask me to do when he would visit the Dallas location) when he was commissioned by Kohler to re-design the Baker trade showrooms (where I was General Manager at the time).  Bill's vision for the showroom spaces was incredible, and the furniture collection he created for Baker was equally as impressive.  And, of course, I had to snag his autograph for prosperity.

Collections

Everyone is a collector of something.  We just happen to be collector's of vases of any type--ceramic, glass, vintage--most of which are in storage.  We don't really collect for value, but rather for aesthetic appeal.  We knew we were vase collectors when on a trip to New York, when planning which places we would hit first--we put Jonathan Adler's SoHo store in front of the Guggenheim.

Jot it down...

It has always been said, that you never know when inspiration will strike.  That is so true for me.  And, inspiration always seems to strike me when I don't have my trusty Moleskin--at lunch or dinner.  So what do you do?  What many a great architect, artist, or writer would do--grab a napkin.  In fact, I think there is a book out there with images of great works that began on a napkin or drink coaster.  And, there really is something special about drawing on napkins.  I love the way the ink bleeds into the thin paper--art in itself.
I recently came across an old notebook that had some old "rough" drafts on napkins from past projects--and not so past projects.  Oh, and it seems I do eat at What-a-burger way too much, based on the napkins I found.....

Met Home

....or more commonly known as Metropolitan Home.  Well, maybe I'm old fashioned, but I miss getting my Met Home in the mail.  They always managed to photograph projects that were not the norm--especially in a design world drowning in a "sea of sameness".  Still, there are many really great design rags on the racks.  I am more recently drawn to Elle Decor, Habitus Living, and Vogue Living (Australia).

The only issues that were rescued from the "tear-sheet" files

Art Studies

"Desert Flower"
I am exploring the idea for a body of work that will consist of found materials and objects, re-fashioned into different forms.  Some of the works will be created by using traditional methods of knitting and crochet to transform the found materials into unconventional organic forms.

One, Two, Three: Heaven for a Southerner

...being from the South (South Louisiana, to be exact), nothing says "fall" like greens and bacon.  We don't necessarily feel the change in the weather at first, but greens always does the trick for me!!
One:  wash greens

Two:  cook bacon

Three:  add chopped greens, water, salt/pepper,  cover and wait!

Do we know how lucky we are?

Mark di Suvero
I was rushing through the mall the other day (Northpark Center, Dallas) to pick up a gift for my wife--all the while "wizzing" by incredible works of art.  So, I asked myself, "do we know how lucky we are?"--to have works by the likes of Claes Oldenburg, Joel Shapiro, Andy Warhol, and Jim Dine as permanent installations in our local mall.  Today, I stopped to smell the roses.

Artist, James Gilbert

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Los Angeles based artist, James Gilbert, last fall while he was in Dallas working on a installation for the Dallas Contemporary.  I love, love, love James' work--it is both provocative and insightful.  I have always thought of art as the manipulation of line, form, and color to create a human response.  Well, James' art certainly fits my definition of art--I would even call it spectacular.  You can see much more of his work on his site:  jamesgilbertstudio.com.
